Best Denim Washing Tips

1.  Read the label. This isn't rocket science, but it's true. It's also a good idea to read labels before buying an item. That way, if you are the kind of person that doesn't like to take things to the dry cleaner, you can avoid buying the clothes that need a professional clean.

2.  Wash a new denim garment by itself in cold water. New clothes tend to bleed dye which could stain other clothes. If you notice the garment has lost a lot of color after the wash, you may want to rinse out your machine before starting the next load. Cold water is a general rule for all denim, even if you aren't washing it for the first time.

 

3.  Wash the garment inside out. This helps keep the color in your garment and the “good side” of your garment will experience less friction when going through the wash.

4. Watch the shrinking denim! If you want you want your garment to shrink a little, put it in the dryer for about 60 minutes. If not, you may want to line dry. Also, if your garment is too long to suit you, wait to re-hem it until after the first wash. After the first wash, you probably won't need to worry about shrinking.

5. You may love orange juice, but your jeans don't. Acids tend to make the ink run, so rinse your garment quickly, especially if you have a dark colored denim.

6.  If air drying, put your garment in the dryer for a few minutes to take out the stiffness. Denim tends to get stiff after air drying. Putting the garment in the dryer for a few minutes on low will take the stiffness right out.

7. Take the stress out of washing. Denim is pretty forgiving when it comes to washing. If you don't have white denim, raw denim, or pre-stressed jeans, you should have no worries. Washing it every 4-6 wears is good. Throw your garment in the washer on regular and wash with like colors. When it's done washing, place it in the dryer and go relax.

8. Dry clean white denim garments. White denim is considered one of the hardest fabrics to keep looking nice. It is a magnet for lint and yellows over time. Plus, stains can't hide. Experts suggest using scotch guard to prevent future stains. Also, unlike other denim garments which should be washed eery 4-6 wearings, wash white denim after every wearing. Don't bleach the garment unless it's 100% cotton. Air dry white denim in the shade. If this is intimidating, take your white denim garments to the dry cleaners and let the professionals handle it.
